Great Ways to Honor Memorial Day!
May 26, 2008: Memorial Day
The holiday, formerly called Decoration Day, honors all U.S. men and women who died in military service for the United States. The US Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday in 1971 and we celebrate on the last Monday of every May. Families celebrate with picnics, family gatherings, and sporting events, and leave flags, flowers or notes on the graves of fallen soldiers.
Teach your students about Memorial Day with the following activities:
1) Pass out pictures of the US flag and have kids color them with markers and coloring pencils.
2) Print out My Special USA Patriotic Alphabet from Enchanted Learning, and have kids trace the letters in this red, white, and blue-themed worksheet.
3) Thank American troops by having children help decorate and write thank you letters and cards. Click here to find out how kids are showing their appreciation for our troops and share these ideas with your class!
4) Have fun with patriotic crafts, like a flag made out of painted craft sticks or an American flag wall hanging.
5) Work in some alphabet practice with a printable "F" worksheet. Introduce the letter "F" for "flag" and share some background information on the American flag by explaining what the stars and stripes represent. Learn more about our nation's flag here.
6) At snack time, bring out graham crackers and white frosting. Use red and blue food coloring to color the frosting, and have students decorate each graham cracker to look like the American flag.
