May is Get Caught Reading Month
This month is part of an ongoing nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how fun and fulfilling it is to read.
- The campaign was launched in 1999 with support from the Association of American Publishers (AAP).
- Adults should participate by reading a book but also encouraging young children to read and enjoy books, magazines, and all kinds of literature.

How Can YOU get caught reading?
-Allocate a half hour every day of the month to "Get Caught Reading Time." Allow children to peruse anything from comics to picture books to magazines. Take pictures of your students or other teachers reading and post them on your classroom bulletin board. Kids will love to see the photographs!
-Challenge students to get caught reading everywhere?during lunch, during free time, at home, and in bed! Involve parents by sending letters home and asking them to take a picture when they catch their child reading! Add these photographs to the bulletin board at school.
-Every time you catch a student reading, award them with a sticker prize! For greater motivation, announce that students with the most stickers at the end of the month will receive a grand prize.
-Team up with the local library to create a Get Caught Reading community event. Invite your school's principal, teachers, parents, and children to read a book together and discuss it. Offer refreshments, organize games, and hand out certificate to students as an added incentive! Make reading a fun event and show students how reading can be enjoyed alone and with others.
