June 15, 2008 - Happy Father's Day!

Father's Day is a complement to Mother's Day, celebrating fatherhood and honoring fathers for their contributions. A woman named Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, decided to start Father's Day after she was inspired by a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Sonora's mother passed away during childbirth and as the oldest of six children, Sonora was raised by her father and loved him very much. She chose June 19th to celebrate Father's Day because the day was also her father's birthday. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day on the third Sunday of every June. Other countries such as Australia, Canada, India, Brazil, Taiwan and more, celebrate Father's Day as well.
Gear up for Father's Day with these fun activities that will make dads feel appreciated:
1) Use these printables to decorate Happy Father's Day cards. Provide markers, colored pencils, glue, construction paper and old magazines so children can embellish their cards.
2) Have some alphabet fun with the letter "D" for "dad" activities. Show children how to spell "dad," then have them practice their letter formation skills with these reproducible worksheets.
3) Do your kids know the song B-I-N-G-O? Spell and sing out D-A-D-D-Y to the same tune, using song lyrics here! Using magnetic letters and whiteboards, ask children to spell out "daddy" and discuss the different ways children address their dads.
4) Help children create coupons they can give to their dads on Father's Day. Using construction paper and markers, write down customized coupon messages like "This coupon entitles Dad to a hug!" Ask children to help you brainstorm what they'd like to "give" to their dads.
5) Invite children to share favorite memories with their dads and what they appreciate about their dads.
6) Involve dads in your classroom by inviting them to your classroom for a special Father's Day treat. Serve refreshments, have children sing the D-A-D-D-Y song and present their handmade cards thanking fathers for their love and support. Ask dads to lead shared reading sessions with a book like Stuck in the Mud. Discuss the theme of helping others and ask children to share ways that their dads have helped them.
